Until recently no report explained the privacy interests implicated by integrated justice information systems and what should be done to address the public's privacy concerns. The first attempt to develop a process for drafting a privacy policy in an integrated justice effort was Privacy Schmrivacy?: Drafting privacy policy in an integrated justice environment (and why it's important) published by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority in 2004. Since then, the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative published its Privacy Policy Development Guide which built upon Illinois's privacy policy development experiences.

Nevertheless, there is still no document that sets forth, in a convenient checklist format, an approach to privacy policy development that can be utilized by government (and some private) entities. I am currently drafting a document on collaborative policy development, tentatively entitled Drafting privacy policy in 137 deceptively easy steps: an annotated checklist, that will fill this need. In the mean time, this section provides some important tools and processes that can be used to begin your privacy policy development efforts.
